Affiliate Marketing
Important Concepts
A. Affiliate
Marketing -- What It Is
- Affiliate
marketing is a very well-established business model in the online retail world.
- In
affiliate marketing, merchants allow people like you and me to become their affiliates, and promote their
goods on our own websites.
- In
return, the merchant pays us a commission on those sales.
- An
"affiliate program" is the administrative setup that manages the relationship between a merchant and
affliates.
B. Affiliate
Marketing is Big Business
- Amazon.com
was first to take it mainstream over 14 years ago.
- Thousands
of online retailers use affiliate marketing and pay tens of thousands of
affiliates.
- Estimates
of affiliate marketing sales run anywhere from $6.3 billion to as high as $95
billion.
C. How You
Make Money with Affiliate Marketing
- You are
paid when someone makes purchases through the special links issued by your
merchant.
- Not MLM,
no investment in inventory, no customer service, and no commitment to just one
merchant.
- The
merchant doesn't guarantee you will earn any income. It's up to you to promote your links and get people to
click through to the merchant's sales page.
D. What It's
Like to Be an Affiliate
- You're
an independent business person, not an employee, and will spend a little money and time up front to
start.
- You
invest your time and resources into selling the products and services owned by the
merchant.
- You own
and operate your own website, which is independent from the merchant's website.
- You
choose the products you'll promote, the merchants you'll represent. You can change merchants, or even
represent many different merchants.
- Some
merchants may restrict you from doing certain types of marketing, such as email
marketing.
