Skyrocket your eBay selling price with a fabulous photo

A picture can be worth more than a thousand words on eBay -- it can be worth extra dollars in your pocket!

A good photo is crucial to your eBay selling success. People like to know exactly what they're bidding on -- warts and all. And a good photo will show them exactly what you have on offer!

The key is to take pictures that accurately portray your product... so that when your auction winners receive their item, they get exactly what they were expecting and leave you positive feedback.

Here are some picture-taking must-haves that will help you maximize your eBay selling success:

  • Save time by using a digital camera. You won't have to worry about developing and scanning rolls of film. And you'll also be able to see whether you've taken your winning photograph right away.

  • Take close-up shots of the entire item. To include the most detail, your product should fill the entire screen. If you have a “macro” setting on your camera -- use it!

  • Include multiple photos. Take shots of your item from multiple views and angles (front, back, side, top), as well as the more detailed close-up shots.

    Don't forget to take close-ups of any flaws!

  • Photograph your item in natural light whenever possible. Alternatively, you can use spotlight lamps to help fill in any shadowed spots on your item.

    Just make sure that, if using a lamp, you use a light bulb that simulates natural daylight (giving a white glow, rather than the blue of fluorescent or the yellow of regular bulbs) -- especially for items like clothing where color is very important.

  • Avoid using a flash. A flash can wash out your item and produce unsightly glares. If you absolutely must use flash, try tilting your item before photographing it to minimize glare.

  • Use plain backgrounds to make your item stand out. A white bed sheet or piece of paper will work for most items, but if your product is light-colored, use a darker background.

  • Include contextual references. Show the size of your object or its color by setting it in context. You can include an easily recognizable object such as a Pepsi can for color, or a penny for size.

A bad photo can discourage potential bidders as much as a good photo can attract them. And an alarming number of eBay sellers use poor quality or fuzzy photographs to show off their wares -- or even no photos at all!
